Prof. Edward S. Morse has increased the debt of gratitude I already owe him, by taking his precious time to draw my illustrations, and prepare them for the engraver. Mr. J. Edward Fickett of Portland, a sailmaker, and formerly of the navy, has assisted in the chapter upon tents; and there are numbers of my young friends who will recognize the results of their experience, as they read these pages, and will please to receive my thanks for making them known to me.

This is a great read. As someone who likes to try more traditional backpacking/camping methods when out in the wilderness this has turned out to be a font of knowledge. As you can see from the photos, the book is small enough and light enough to be carried WHILE backpacking for added ambiance. Font is a little larger than normal print, so it's easy to read in low-light situations or without glasses w/e.

Gould gets a little antiquated when he starts outlining the differences between women and men in the woods, but if you chalk that up to it being a book written a little over a decade after the civil war, it's a decent read. What Gould said about respecting everyone you meet out there, and doing your best to LNT resonated with me- the more time you spend out in the woods, the more you realize just how necessary this is.

Maybe someday I'l do a complete old-school hike- when I do I'll be relying on this and the American Boy's Handybook heavily.

This book has a lot of good useful tips on some camping. Its written for those who speak British English, Its a little frustrating not knowing some of the British terms, but you can figure it out. I know a lot of the stuff already, I was just hoping for some new tips and methods for doing things out in the back country. I would read it if you are new to the Outdoor scene.
Gift for my wife. She liked it so well she ordered a long sleeved one. It's sized a bit on the small side, so one star deduction.
This book is OLD! Was written along time ago. Was neat to read and have to think about taking axel grease for my wagon, feed for the livestock that might be pulling my wagon with camping gear. Having to take into consideration that to get to my camping spot might take a few weeks (since I'd be walking to the mountains). How much beans, bacon, butter I'd need. This is a quick read. For anyone that is into camping and thinking we have it rough these days, check out what roughing it is all about in the early 1900s.
Looking for modern camping tips, then this is not for you. But if you're really familiar with modern camping, this will be VERY entertaining! Written shortly after the Civil War, it has some tips that really don't apply to our modern "Leave No Trace" mindset of camping! For example, what this book calls a "camp stove" is a cast-iron wood stove! (Sure, at $10, it's a bit pricey, but not to worry -- you have room in your covered wagon, and it'll last through many a camp outing!) How funny is that!
Great book with insight to the "Good'ol Days"! When men were men, boys were raised as such & groomed to be men. A Win-1894 was a completely normal EDC item & each man was dependent upon himself alone for survival, with a little help from the community at times. uuuuuh-haaaaa...

Anyhow, book came in New condition as expected & arrived in 2 business days w/Prime. Very easy read with the exception of mid-late 1800's English vernacular.

Pick it up...completely worth it.
A lot of information might not help campers today. We don't make canvas tents at home, don't travel in wagons & women don't hike in floor length dresses and high button leather soled shoes. Mostly, the book tells us a little about our ancestors. They vacationed cheap, saw as much of the country as they could and cherished their freedom above all things.
We are fortunate to have a system of state parks now, with camping facilities. The best people in America are to be met in these parks. Happy camping!
It doesn't matter whether you want to read this for a peek into what camping was like 140 years ago ("women's dresses should not touch the ground") or to give you some good advice for camping in the 21st Century ("there is no need to buy every latest gimmick"). Most of it is still applicable (perhaps not the instruction to be sure to pack shoe polishing equipment) and much of the practical instruction fills a gap in knowledge that exists today because of our reliance on others to do the skilled tasks. Would you like to know how to make your own tent pegs? Or how to avoid mould if you have to pack away your tent while it's damp? Or even how to make your own tent?

It's unfortunate that the illustrations aren't included in this kindle edition, but the step-by-step instructions make it possible to manage without, for the most part.

And perhaps my favourite quote "They say that a little gunpowder flashed in the tent will drive out flies and mosquitoes. I saw a man try it once, but noticed that he himself went out in a great hurry, while the flies, if they went out at all, were back again before he was." Ah, those were the days! -)

A gem of a book.
